Miami University Director of Athletics David Sayler has announced promotions for both Alex Reid and Ryan Swallow. Reid has been promoted to Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance, while Swallow is the new Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Academic Support Services.
Â
Reid joined Miami Athletics in April, 2021 as the Director of Compliance and during his time with the RedHawks, he has overseen the implementation of ARMs and brought forth various partnerships for the growth of NIL for Miami's student-athletes. He was also named Miami's "Teammate of the Year" in 2022-23 and was appointed to the NCAA Pre-enrollment Amateurism Committee.
Â
"First and foremost, I am thankful for being at an institution that allows one to become as invested as they want to be within the department," said Reid. "I appreciate the recognition of my office's work through this promotion, but it is truly a testament to those I work alongside who have assisted me and guided me along the way. I want to express my gratitude to David Sayler, and his executive team, for their trust in me along the way. The opportunities afforded to me during my time at Miami University have been plentiful and I look forward to taking on more challenges along the way. I am excited to continue to help Miami grow in this ever-changing collegiate landscape."
Â
Prior to joining the RedHawks, Reid spent two years at the University of Kansas as the Associate Director of Compliance. Reid has also spent time at Middle Tennessee State University and Iowa State.
Â
The Canton, Iowa native received his undergraduate degree for business marketing and management from Northwest Missouri State University. Additionally, he has a law degree from Drake University with a certificate in Food and Agricultural Law.
Â
Swallow came to Miami Athletics in 2019 to serve as the Director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services. During his time with the RedHawks, Miami continued to maintain over a 3.0 grade-point average, which now stretches out to 38-straight semesters. He also restructured the Individual Learning Specialist (ILS) program, helping to provide additional support for student-athletes. He also was named a Spirit of Miami winner in 2020-21.
Â
"I would like to start by saying that I am excited and thankful for this opportunity," said Swallow. "I am honored to work for a university that has allowed me to continue to grow professionally and to develop new ideas to help foster success for our student-athletes. Our student-athletes continue to be successful in the classroom, having earned a 3.30 GPA for the fall semester. I am thankful to work for such a dedicated group of student-athletes that strive to excel in the classroom and in their sport. I would also like to thank David Sayler, Chauncey Winbush, our academic coordinators and the rest of the athletic department for their continued support throughout my time at Miami University. I look forward to continuing to develop new ideas to ensure our students remain successful in the classroom and continue to reach their goals."
Â
Prior to joining athletics, Swallow was an Academic Advisor for the College of Arts and Sciences for Miami University from 2011-19. He has also spent time at Morehead State (2009-11) as a college access counselor and at Toledo (2006-08) in numerous roles.
Â
He completed his undergraduate degree from Ohio State in political science in 2005 and added a master's degree from Toledo in higher education in 2008.
