RedHawks Outlast App State to Grab 3-2 Overtime Victory

OXFORD, Ohio – In a heavily defensive game on Thursday afternoon, the No. 3 Miami University field hockey team took down No. 2 Appalachian State University 3-2 in overtime. Miami moves to 12-7 on the season, and App State finishes their season 11-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A back-and-forth first quarter resulted in no change in the 0-0 score heading into the second.
  • Just about midway through the second quarter, the RedHawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a penalty corner when Claudia Negrete Garcia scored. She was assisted by Paula Navarro and Berta Mata.
  • Two minutes later, App State tied the game up 1-1 with a penalty corner of their own. The tie held through the end of the first half.
  • A pair of incredible defensive saves from goalkeeper Nicky Sjouken and back Mata with two minutes remaining in the third, kept the game 1-1 heading into the final quarter.
  • With under five minutes remaining in regulation, an App State penalty corner tied the game once more, now at 2-2. This score held through regulation to send the game into overtime.
  • With under five minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Paula Peña Martinez notched the game-winner off an initial save from App State's goalkeeper. Her unassisted goal gave the RedHawks a 3-2 victory.
