RedHawks Fall 9-2 to Northwestern in NCAA First Round

EVANSTON, Ill. – On Friday afternoon the Miami University field hockey team fell 9-2 to Northwestern University in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament. The RedHawks finish the season 14-8. Northwestern moves to 20-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the first quarter the Wildcats were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The first and third goals came on penalty corners. The other goal came following a Miami penalty corner.
  • Just under five minutes into the second, Northwestern notched another goal to make it a 4-0 deficit.
  • Another penalty corner with five minutes left in the first half led to another Wildcat goal, making it a 5-0 difference. This score remained through the end of the half.
  • Just over two minutes into the third quarter, Northwestern scored another goal and then seconds later, scored another to push their lead to 7-0.
  • Claudia Negrete Garcia got the RedHawks on the board five minutes into the third on a penalty corner to make it a 7-1 game. She was assisted by Berta Mata and Henriette Schlueter.
  • Negrete Garcia scored again four minutes later, this time unassisted to make it a 7-2 score.
  • With just over a minute remaining in the third, the Wildcats scored again to up their lead to 8-2, which they held through the end of the third.
  • The Wildcats tacked on another goal with just over one minute remaining in the game to make it a 9-2 final.
