Hat-trick for Negrete Garcia in 4-3 Victory over Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – On Friday evening the Miami University field hockey team battled Longwood University to a 4-3 double overtime victory. The RedHawks improve to 8-6 on the season and 5-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Longwood drops to 4-8 (2-4 MAC) on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
UP NEXT: The RedHawks take on the No. 4 University of Virginia on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game remained scoreless 0-0 through the end of the first quarter.
- With seconds left in the first half, Claudia Negrete Garcia got the RedHawks on the board 1-0 by scoring during a penalty corner. Berta Mata and Carlie Servis earned assists on the play.
- The Lancers tied the game up 1-1 just minutes into the third quarter on a penalty corner goal.
- During a penalty corner with under a minute remaining in the third quarter, Longwood scored again to take their first lead of the match 2-1.
- A penalty corner just two minutes into the final quarter allowed Negrete Garcia to notch her second goal of the game and even the score to 2-2. Mata and Servis each earned assists.
- With under three minutes remaining in the game, Negrete Garcia earned herself a hat-trick and took the 3-2 lead for the RedHawks, scoring on a penalty corner off assists from Mata and Servis.
- The Lancers fought back, scoring on another penalty corner just seven seconds later. The score was tied again at 3-3.
- The tie held through regulation, sending the RedHawks into overtime.
- Still tied at 3-3 after the first overtime period, the game went into a second overtime period.
- Six and a half minutes later, Reese Wearren scored the game-winner for the RedHawks, giving them the 4-3 overtime win. Servis earned a fourth assist on the play.
UP NEXT: The RedHawks take on the No. 4 University of Virginia on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
