YPSILANTI, Mich. – Brett Gabbert threw four touchdowns for the Miami University football team in a 38-14 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon at Rynearson Stadium. Miami's defense added a pair of turnovers and held EMU to 18.4 points under its season average. The RedHawks improve to 2-4 overall (1-1 MAC), while EMU falls to 4-2 (1-1 MAC).
How it Happened:
- On the opening offensive play of the contest, Gabbert hit Reggie Virgil on a 75-yard post route for a touchdown.
- Eastern Michigan answered with a 12-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Cole Snyder on the Eagles' opening drive.
- After back-to-back EMU three-and-outs, Miami's defense forced a turnover on downs around midfield with 13:53 left in the second quarter. Gabbert was 3-for-4 for 46 yards on the ensuing drive, capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Connor Briggs to put the RedHawks up 14-7 midway through the period.
- Matt Salopek intercepted Snyder at the EMU 34-yard line with 2:29 left in the half. It was Snyder's first interception of the season and the second interception of Salopek's career. After 15 yards rushing from Keyon Mozee and Jordan Brunson, Gabbert threw his third touchdown of the game, a 19-yard completion to Virgil in the back of the end zone.
- The Eagles opened the second half with a 14-play, 57-yard drive, down to the Miami 4-yard-line, but came up empty on their fourth-down attempt. After a Miami punt, Eastern Michigan once again drove the field, but this time scored from one yard out to make it 21-14 with 2:41 left in the third.
- Following the EMU score, Gabbert connected with Kam Perry on a 30-yard catch and run to midfield. A late hit moved the RedHawks into Eastern Michigan territory at the 35-yard line. Three plays later Gabbert found freshman Cole Weaver for a 24-yard touchdown. It was Weaver's first career catch.
- Dom Dzioban added a 44-yard field goal with 5:01 to play to extend Miami's advantage to 31-14, and a late 44-yard rush from Jordan Brunson made it 38-14.
Game Notes:
- Corban Hondru made his first career start and finished with a career-best 16 tackles.
- Reid Holskey and Matt Salopek each made the 46th start of their careers.
- Connor Briggs had his first career catch as a RedHawk, a five-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.
- Reggie Virgil had the first multi-touchdown game of his career, scoring from 75 and 19 yards.
- Gabbert has now thrown for 9,277 yards and 68 touchdowns in his career, both third-best in program history. It was Gabbert's first four-touchdown performance since Sept. 9, 2023 at UMass.
- Eli Blakey had a career-best 18 tackles.
- Kam Perry had the longest catch of his Miami career, a 30-yard catch-and-run late in the third quarter.
- Miami rushed for a season-high 199 yards, led by 100 from Keyon Mozee.
