MEMPHIS, Tenn. —The Miami University volleyball team defeated the University of Memphis 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Larry O. Finch Center. Sophomores
Ellie Hanson and
Hayden Hicks were named to the all-tournament team.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Miami got off to a great 3-1 start in the first set thanks to a pair of early kills from Raegan Lantz. The RedHawks maintained their lead halfway through the set at 13-11. A combination of late kills from Hanson and Chelsea Williams helped Miami go on a 5-1 run to win the first set 25-17.
- Miami commanded a 9-4 lead in the second set after the Tigers committed a collection of attack errors. Hanson caught fire midway through the second set, recording numerous kills and back-to-back service aces. Despite numerous attempts to overtake Miami, Memphis dropped the second set 25-19.
- Memphis came out ready in the third set, pulling ahead 8-2 at the start. The RedHawks remained focused, crawling back within three points at 11-8. The Red and White tied the set at 18-18 after Hanson put down yet another kill. Hicks followed this up with a service ace to give the Red and White its first lead of the set. Miami ultimately closed the match out with a 25-18 third set win.
NOTES:
- Hanson recorded a match-high 15 kills.
- Maggie McCrary tied the match-high in blocks (3).
- Hicks dished out the most assists (32) and service aces in the match (3).

The RedHawks return home for the Miami/Best Western Invitational Sept. 1-2. Miami takes on Cleveland State in the home opener at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1. On Saturday, Sept. 2, the RedHawks face off with Florida Atlantic at 11 a.m., before closing out against Eastern Kentucky at 6:30 p.m.
