Head coach Iñako Puzo has announced that Joan Carol Oliveras has joined the hockey staff as an assistant coach. A veteran of the international hockey scene, including a current appointment as one of the video analysts for the Spanish national team, Carol brings a wealth of experience as a player, coach, and video analyst to Oxford.
Â
"We are excited to bring Joan to the team," declared Puzo. "Joan is passionate about the game and about coaching. His knowledge and energy will have an immediate impact on this program."
Â
"I am excited to join the Miami program and work alongside Iñako to support the development of the players," stated Carol. "I was very intrigued by Iñako's offer and am thrilled to see it come to fruition."
Â
Carol currently is one of the video analysts for the Spanish women's national team, a side currently ranked 7th in the world. His years of experience in this field include stints with Spanish Under-18 boys and girls, the Catalonian U-18 and U-16 boys, FC Junior's first men's team and Club Egara first ladies' team. In addition, Carol has coached numerous national and elite regional teams, including the national U-18 boys and the regional U-18 and U-16 girls.
Â
"I am a coach who is passionate about this sport," added Carol. "I love teaching and helping the players improve. Despite being very competitive, my biggest concern is not the final score. For me, it's important to have a game plan that the players understand and from which they can grow and develop." Despite not focusing on the score, Carol has won eight Catalonian championships and two national championships while finishing as national runner-up four times during his illustrious career.
Â
"His experiences with the Spanish high performance program as well as coaching youth at the club level give him a great balance in his coaching," added Puzo. Â "He can teach the game from the very basics all the way to the top level, deliver the message, and execute the plan."
Â
Carol earned his degrees in Journalism and Corporate Communication as well as Audiovisual Communication from Blanquerna – Ramon Llull in Barcelona. He has also earned his Level 2 coaching certification from the Catalan Federation, the second-highest degree offered.
Â
The RedHawks open the season on Friday, Aug. 25 as Miami travels to California to take on the Bears at 5:00 p.m.
