Comeback Falls Short Versus Bulls

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University women's basketball team nearly erased an 18-point second half deficit, but fell 81-76 to the University at Buffalo on Wednesday evening. Miami (8-14, 3-6 MAC) was led by Peyton Scott's 27 points, while Re'Shawna Stone scored 22 to lead the Bulls (9-9, 4-5 MAC).

Ivy Wolf and Amani Freeman each finished with 12 points, while Maddi Cluse chipped in with 11. Cluse and Freeman each had six rebounds as well.

How it Happened:
  • Buffalo took an early 8-5 lead, connecting on back-to-back three pointers to begin the contest, but a Katey Richason put-back bucket closed the gap 10-9 midway through the first quarter. UB closed the quarter on an 11-3 run for a 21-12 advantage.
  • UB's run continued to begin the second, forcing a DeUnna Hendrix timeout three minutes into the second quarter as the Bulls claimed a 27-14 lead. The Bulls led 38-23 at the half.
  • Miami scored five quick points to start the second half to shrink the deficit to just 10, but UB answered with a 10-2 run for their largest lead of the game, 52-34 with five minutes left in the third quarter. Coming out of the media timeout, Cluse converted a three-point play. Cluse then found Sierra Morrow for a layup and Scott connected on a pair of free throws to trim the deficit to 11. Scott beat the buzzer to close the third as the RedHawks trailed 53-45.
  • Freeman's layup closed the gap, 56-50, but UB responded with a 5-0 run to push the lead back to double figures. Once again, a Freeman bucket shrunk UB's lead to just eight, 66-58. Cluse drained a triple from the corner and Scott's pull-up jumper made it a three-point game. Moments later, Wolf's three from the top of arc to tied the game, 66-66, with three minutes to play. UB answered with five straight and after an 11-4 run, led 77-71 with 30 seconds to play. Scott's pull up triple made it 77-74 with 25 second to play, but a pair of Buffalo free throws put the game out of reach.

Game Notes:
  • With 27 points, Peyton Scott now has 1,723 career points. The 27 points were also a season-high for Scott.
