5-1 Win Over Ball State Captures Regular Season Championship

OXFORD, Ohio – On Friday afternoon the Miami University field hockey team claimed their seventh consecutive regular season Mid-American Conference Championship in spectacular fashion with a 5-1 win over Ball State University. The RedHawks move to 12-7 on the season and 6-1 in the MAC. The Cardinals drop to 7-10 and 2-5 in the MAC.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With the seconds ticking down in the first quarter Claudia Negrete Garcia scored unassisted after some impressive stick maneuvers to put the RedHawks up 1-0 heading into the second.
  • Hadley Evans doubled the Miami lead to 2-0 on a penalty corner less than five minutes into the second quarter.
  • The RedHawks held this 2-0 lead through the conclusion of the first half of play.
  • Ball State cut the lead in half about halfway through the third quarter, making it a 2-1 game.
  • The RedHawks answered quickly when Kylie Coughlin scored her first career goal off an assist from Sloane Wearren to push the lead to 3-1. This score was held through the end of the third.
  • During a penalty corner less than a minute into the final quarter Negrete Garcia scored her second goal of the game. She was assisted by Carlie Servis and Madison Workman to widen the gap to 4-1.
  • Berta Mata then joined in on the scoring fun, putting her first of the season in the back of the net to up the lead to 5-1 about four minutes into the fourth quarter.
  • The RedHawks held their lead through the remainder of the game to take it 5-1 and clinch their seventh consecutive MAC Regular Season Championship Title.
  • With this win Miami secures the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament Championship.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks will return to the field in the postseason for the MAC Tournament Championship in Oxford, Ohio. They will face off against No. 4 seeded Ohio University in game 1 at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 3.
