COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Miami captain Derek Daschke was named a finalist for the NCHC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, the conference announced today. Daschke, a native of Troy, Mich., has appeared in 131 career games for the RedHawks, scoring 23 goals and handing out 61 assists. He ranks eighth in program history for career points by a defenseman with 84. He has received two NCHC Defenseman of the Week awards, and was also an NCHC Rookie of the Week during the 2018-19 season.
Daschke is a four-time member of the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and was named an NCHC Distinguished Scholar Athlete during each of the last four seasons. As a junior, Derek received Miami Hockey's Mitch Korn Outstanding Defensive Player Award. He is earning a degree in supply chain and operations management from the Farmer School of Business.
The NCHC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award honors someone who has made contributions on and off the ice during his career while achieving a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5. It recognizes academic achievement, athletic achievement, community service and campus involvement. The finalists are selected by a vote of the member universities' Faculty Athletics Representatives, with the winner of the 2022 NCHC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award to be announced at next Thursday's NCHC Awards Celebration in Saint Paul, Minn.
