DURHAM, N.C.—A gritty effort lifted the Miami University volleyball team (2-4) to a 3-1 win against Howard University (2-4) on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium to cap the RedHawks' stint at the Duke Invitational, 25-19, 27-29, 27-25, 26-24.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Howard opened up a 10-7 lead, but Miami rattled off four unanswered points—capped by a service ace by freshman Lydia Harper—to take an 11-10 lead in the opening stanza. The teams went back and forth before Miami used another 4-0 surge to push ahead 19-15. The Bison got no closer than three down the stretch as the RedHawks collected a 25-19 win in the first set.
- After trailing 5-2, the RedHawks used a 6-0 surge to claim an 8-5 advantage in a very tight second set in which neither team led by more than three points. Miami held a 23-21 lead late in the set, but the Bison inched out the set two win, 29-27.
- Miami used a 6-1 run to take an 8-7 edge in the third set. Howard led by as many as three before Miami used a 7-2 flurry to notch a 19-17 advantage. Howard held a 24-23 lead, but a kill and service ace from senior Sophie Riemersma gave Miami the 27-25 set three win.
- Miami jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the fourth set and led 11-5 early on in the stanza. Howard climbed back to notch a 14-13 edge and went on to build a 19-15 advantage. The RedHawks chiseled away to knot the set at 23-23. A Howard attack error followed by a Riemersma kill clinched the match for the RedHawks with a 26-24 set four win.
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH CAROLYN CONDIT:
"It's nice to take home two wins from this weekend's Duke Invitational. We outlasted a well-coach Howard team today, which is led by head coach Shaun Kupferberg, a Miami alumnus. Sophie and Gaby made a big difference at the left pin, as did the play of sophomore libero
Taylor Nomanson. Our team also had an effective out-of-system game, which contributed to the win."
NOTES:
- Riemersma and Nomanson were named to the All-Tournament Team.
- Riemersma led all players with 17 kills and added three service aces and four blocks to her stat line.
- Senior Gaby Harper notched 15 kills, 18 digs and four blocks.
- Nomanson amassed 20 digs to lead all players and recorded her second 20-dig effort of the season.
- Freshman Brooke Cirigliano led all players with six blocks.
- Lydia Harper led Miami with 21 assists and added 10 digs.
