OXFORD, Ohio—In the finale of the Miami/Best Western Invitational, the Miami University volleyball team (2-6) fell in three sets to Northern Kentucky University (4-3) on Saturday night inside Millett Hall, 22-25, 25-27, 15-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Miami opened up a 4-2 lead in the first set, but NKU used a 6-0 spurt to push ahead, 8-4. The RedHawks climbed back to knot the set, 15-15, but the Norse took the opening set, 25-22.
- The second set was tight in the early goings. Miami pushed ahead to a four-point edge off a senior Sophie Riemersma kill, 18-14. NKU came back to knot the set at 19-19, but a senior Gaby Harper kill helped put Miami in front, 23-19. The Norse went on a 5-0 spurt to take a one-point edge and went on to a 27-25 win in the second set.
- Northern Kentucky opened up a 12-6 lead in the third set and went on to pick up a 25-15 win to take the match.
NOTES:
- Freshman Brooke Cirigliano and sophomore Maggie McCrary were named to the all-tournament team.
- Harper led the RedHawks with 11 kills, while Cirigliano notched four blocks.
UP NEXT:
Miami rounds out non-conference play next week against a pair of local rivals, traveling to Xavier for a 6 p.m. match on Friday, Sept. 17 before returning home to host Cincinnati at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18.
