OXFORD, Ohio – Tyre Shelton ran for two touchdowns and
Brett Gabbert threw for two scores as Miami defeated Bowling Green 34-7 Tuesday. The RedHawks improved to 6-5 (5-2 MAC), clinching bowl eligibility for the fifth time in the past six seasons. Miami can capture the MAC East championship and a trip to the conference title game in Detroit with a victory next Saturday at Kent State.
The MU defense piled up a season-high eight sacks against BGSU, holding the Falcons to their lowest scoring output since Week 1 at Tennessee.
Dominique Robinson,
Lonnie Phelps, and
Kameron Butler each had two sacks to lead the RedHawks.
Miami WR
Jack Sorenson caught four passes for 111 yards, including an 83-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half. Sorenson topped the 100-yard receiving mark for the sixth consecutive game and moved into fourth place on the RedHawks' career receiving yards list.
Bowling Green scored the first touchdown of the game before Miami's
Chris Cavalaris blocked a Falcon punt to swing momentum and spark the home team. The RedHawks took over at the BGSU 3-yard line and scored two plays later, beginning a stretch of 34 unanswered points.
How It Happened:
- The Falcons struck first, with Terion Stewart breaking a tackle and racing 62 yards for a score on BGSU's third possession.
- Miami answered back after Cavalaris' blocked punt. Caiden Woullard returned the ball to the 3-yard line, setting up a Kevin Davis touchdown run. The extra point was blocked, keeping the score at 7-6.
- Miami's first full drive of the second quarter led to another touchdown, the result of a 63-yard play-action pass from Brett Gabbert into the hands of Mac Hippenhammer.
- A Bowling Green interception would end Miami's next drive prematurely, but the RedHawks soon made up for it after a 25-yard pass from Gabbert to Jack Sorenson put them at the Falcons' 1-yard line. Tyre Shelton crossed the goal line on the next play to put Miami up 20-7 heading to intermission.
- Bowling Green kicked off to start the third quarter, and Miami would waste no time putting another seven points on the board. The Gabbert-to-Sorenson connection from 83 yards away, the longest reception for Sorenson this season, stretched MU's lead to 27-7.
- Miami didn't let up, adding one more touchdown before the end of the third quarter. The RedHawks turned a Matthew Salopek fumble recovery into points, with a pair of Shelton carries covering the remaining 24 yards to pay dirt and finishing the scoring.
Game Notes:
- The win gives the RedHawks their 14th consecutive victory at Yager Stadium, extending the nation's fifth-longest active home win streak.
- Sorenson now has 2,874 receiving yards in his Miami career, passing Michael Larkin (2,772 yards) for fourth on the school's all-time list.
- Shelton had nine carries for a season-high 56 rushing yards.
- Kameron Butler posted a career-high four tackles for loss.
