Weatherford’s Late Game Heroics Cap 24-17 Win Over Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – Sterling Weatherford intercepted Drew Plitt in the end zone with 60 seconds left in the contest to help secure a 24-17 win over Ball State on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the RedHawks to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Ball State falls to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. The win also keeps Miami in a tie for first in the MAC East standings.
 
How it Happened:
  • Sophomore Brett Gabbert was 20-of-24 passing for 207 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win. Gabbert and Jack Sorenson were a deadly combo throughout the contest, connecting on eight receptions and 138 yards.
  • Miami's defense was solid all day, forcing two crucial turnovers and holding Ball State's high-powered offense to just 17 points and 327 yards.
  • Ball State opened the game with a touchdown drive before the RedHawks scored the final 10 points of the first quarter.
  • After the Cardinals tied the game at 10-10, Miami responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown from Keyon Mozee. The RedHawks led 16-10 at the half.
  • BSU scored on its first drive of the second half to garner a 17-16 advantage. Miami reclaimed the lead following a six-yard touchdown pass from Gabbert to Nate Muersch. A two-point conversion from Gabbert to Andrew Homer gave Miami a fourth quarter 24-17 lead.
  • After a missed 51-yard field goal, the Cardinals drove down to the Miami-19 before Weatherford's interception sealed the Miami victory.
 
Game Notes:
  • Homer caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter, his third touchdown in the past two games.
  • Jalen Walker recorded his first completion of his career, a 27-yard pass to Jack Sorenson. That reception was Sorenson's 150th of his career and extended his reception streak to 34 straight games. Sorenson finished the contest with eight catches for 138 yards, his third straight 100-yard performance.
  • Matthew Salopek had a career-high 17 tackles.
  • John Saunders Jr. made his first career start at cornerback, finishing the contest with two pass breakups.
