RedHawks Open MAC Play With 28-17 Win Against Central Michigan

Boosted by strong performances from key offensive players and a formidable defense, the Miami University football team claimed victory in its first Mid-American Conference game of the season, winning 28-17 over Central Michigan University. The win brings Miami to 2-3 on the year, with CMU falling to 2-3 on the year and 0-1 in the MAC.

How it Happened:

  • Miami quarterback Brett Gabbert passed for 171 yards and two touchdowns in the first half before being injured late in the second quarter. AJ Mayer replaced Gabbert in the second half, throwing for 179 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns. The two quarterbacks combined for 350 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Miami wide receiver Mac Hippenhammer earned eight receptions for 170 receiving yards across the game.
  • Miami earned three sacks against CMU. The first was the result of an intentional grounding call given to Dominique Robinson and Lonnie Phelps, followed by one apiece for Ben Kimpler and Kameron Butler.
  • Miami's defense held CMU to under 200 yards in the first half, only allowing one touchdown across both quarters.
  • Miami earned an early touchdown in the first quarter after moving 58 yards up the field, with a 24-yard pass from Gabbert to Andrew Homer giving the RedHawks a 7-0 lead.
  • After an intentional grounding call leading to a failed CMU field goal attempt, Miami moved 80 yards up the field for another touchdown towards the end of the first quarter. A 36-yard pass from Gabbert to Jack Sorenson sealed the RedHawk's 14-0 lead.
  • CMU brought the score to 14-10 after a touchdown late in the second quarter and a completed field goal early in the third.
  • A third-and-goal opportunity for Miami ended in an interception for CMU late in the third quarter. After a 71-yard touchdown pass that was nullified due to a penalty, CMU came back in the fourth to score another touchdown, bringing the score to 17-14 in its favor.
  • Miami immediately responded with back-to-back touchdowns. A 23-yard touchdown pass from Mayer to Nate Muersch brought the score to 21-17, with the following CMU drive being stopped after a sack on quarterback Daniel Richardson by Kimpler. The RedHawks continued their momentum with a 31-yard pass from Mayer to Hippenhammer, putting them in position for an 11-yard touchdown pass to Sorenson and bringing the score to 28-17.
