The RedHawks will compete against many of the strongest teams in the region.
OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University track and field team will be in attendance at one of the premier annual events of the indoor season this weekend when the 'Hawks visit South Bend for Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational.
The meet will begin Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. before continuing with a full day of events Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.Â
LAST TIME OUT
The RedHawks were at Indiana last Friday and Saturday for the IU Relays. On day one, the men's distance medley relay team of Anthony Camerieri, Luke Finnegan, Finley Mclear, and Sean Torpy ran one of the best times in school history with a run of 9:37.01, which is the fifth-best time recorded in the event in the nation this season. Elsewhere, Olivia Bechtel continued her great season with a fifth-place finish in the 200 and a third in the 400, where her time of 54.16 was the best in the MAC and 30th in the nation. Emily Akin and Claire Linn turned in solid performances in the distance events as well.
EVENT PREVIEW - SPRINTS
Although she set what was then a school record in the 400 at last year's Meyo Invite, Bechtel will take a break from that event and run in the 60m dash and the 200 this time around. In the prelims for the 60m hurdles Friday night, Kayla Walters and Mallory Harr will get the start for the 'Hawks and look to make a push towards the event finals on Saturday. On the men's side, Jeremiah Hunter will look to keep his strong season rolling in the 60 and the 200, while Finnegan will run the 200 and 400. That duo, along with Ivan Dye and Jacob Matthews, will make up Miami's 4x400 team in Saturday's race.
EVENT PREVIEW - DISTANCE
After setting a new PR just a few weeks ago, Linn will take a crack at the mile along with McKenna Fry. Similarly, Akin is coming off a recent PR in the 800 and will look to replicate it in that event on Saturday. In the 5K, the trio of Katie Vitou, Carly Davis, and Alexa VanderHoff will get the start for Miami. For the men, Mclear and Torpy will take part in the championship section of the 800 and look to put up a good performance against a loaded field.
EVENT PREVIEW - FIELD
Hannah Falcione will again compete in her normal events, jumping in the long jump and triple jump this weekend. Freshman standout Addison Hoover will throw in the weight throw while Matt Lamb and Travis Moore will throw the shot put for the men.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
This weekend will see perhaps the strongest field that Miami has faced yet this season and most of the Midwest's top teams will be at Notre Dame. A large group of Big Ten schools such as Indiana, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Rutgers will have runners present to go along with the host Fighting Irish and several other power-conference schools. In addition, Miami will get the chance to go toe-to-toe with a few fellow Mid-American Conference teams in the build-up to the conference championship in a few weeks, as Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Central Michigan will bring athletes.
NEXT TIME OUT
Miami will attend Grand Valley State's Big Meet next weekend from February 14-15.
