A long list of RedHawks will get a chance to compete in several events this weekend.
OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami track and field team will continue their season this weekend with one of the biggest weekends of the yearly indoor schedule at Grand Valley State's Big Meet on Friday and Saturday.
Each day functions as its own separate meet with a full slate of events each day. Athletes are able to compete in a wider range of events across the weekend and are also able to run in the same event on both days. Friday's schedule starts with the various sections of the 5K at 9:00 a.m., with track events running through the evening and field events starting at noon. On Saturday, a rolling schedule will be implemented beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Miami had a big weekend at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational a week ago, headlined by Finley Mclear's school record and top-ten national time in the 800m. Olivia Bechtel continued to be a standout for the 'Hawks, as she set a new PR of 24.25 in the 200m en route to finishing third. A multitude of other Miami runners had personal best runs, including the likes of Carly Davis, Ivan Dye, and Luke Finnegan. Sean Torpy also had a strong 800 run alongside Mclear.
The meet will feature a long list of teams across all three NCAA divisions. Among the Division I teams in attendance, the RedHawks will see athletes from fellow MAC schools such as Akron, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, Toledo, and Western Michigan. Several other Midwest foes will be in Allendale as well, including Michigan State, Marquette, Bradley, and DePaul.
With the setup of the weekend's events, many athletes will get a chance to take part in multiple events. A large group of women's athletes, including Emily Akin, Claire Linn, Katie Vitou, Carmen Riano, and McKenna Fry will run in Saturday's 800 after splitting across the mile and 3K on Friday. In the sprints, Kayla Walters will run in the hurdles on both days and Gabby Maslowski and Gabby Cossio will run both the 400 and 200. Most of Miami's field athletes will compete in their usual events on both days.
For the men, Mclear will get a chance to repeat his 800 performance in Friday's run. Jeremiah Hunter will run in the 60 on Friday and the 200 on Saturday, with Jacob Matthews running the 400 and 200. In addition, a few other athletes will get their season debuts this weekend in new events.
Bechtel will be Miami's lone athlete competing elsewhere this weekend as she will run in the 400 at Boston University.
The RedHawks will return to Notre Dame next weekend for their penultimate meet before the MAC Indoor Championship on Feb. 28-29.
