CLEVELAND – The Miami University swimming and diving team began 2020 with dual meet wins at Cleveland State on Tuesday. The Miami women beat Cleveland State by a 223-77 margin while the Miami men won by a 162-136 margin. The squad combined for 23 event wins.
The Miami women began the afternoon by sweeping the podium in the 400 medley relay.
Izzy Herb,
Sam Sutton,
Kayleigh Cannon and
Anna Justinak won the event (3:53.62). The Miami men's A relay finished second.
The women had the four-fastest times in the 200 free. Camila Lins de Mello led the way (1:51.84) with
Ashlyn Underhill (1:53.47),
Molly Zilch (1:54.78) and
Bryanna Renuart (1:57.43) rounding out the top four.
Gordon Wheeler finished second in the 200 free (1:43.76) for the men.
The Miami women achieved the same feat in the 100 free. Lins de Mello led the way (51.55) with Underhill once again finishing second (52.49).
Anna Justinak finished third (54.34) and Renuart was the fourth to touch the wall (54.51).
Nick Ward won the men's 100 free (46.57).
The RedHawk women also finished in the top four spots in the 200 breast.
Hannah Fuchs picked up the event win (2:20.13), while
Anna Martin finished second (2:23.16),
Bri Alexander finished third (2:25.73) and
Sam Sutton finished fourth (2:28.68). In the men's 200 breast,
Sam Curran was the runner up (2:07.44).
The men swept the podium in the 100 back.
Fitz Miller won the event (51.78) with
Preston Harrison (52.80) and
Jacob Peloquin (53.41) finishing in second and third, respectively. On the women's side,
Izzy Herb had the fastest time (58.08).
The women had the three-fastest times in the 100 fly.
Kayleigh Cannon won the event for the women (56.95) while
Preston Harrison won the event for the men (50.27). Underhill (57.68) and
Madison Hoehn (59.39) finished second and third, respectively, for the women.
The Miami women finished in the top three spots in the 100 breast with Fuchs getting the event win (1:05.77) to sweep the breaststroke competition. Martin (1:06.66) and Sutton (1:06.73) rounded out the top three swims.
Noah Barr finished second (57.35) in the men's 100 breast.
The RedHawk women also finished with the top three times in the 200 back. Herb swept the backstroke competition with the win (2:06.44).
Carolyn Jungers (2:10.93) and
Alyssa Schroeder (2:10.98) finished second and third, respectively. In the men's 200 back, Miller was the runner up (1:55.08).
Fuchs picked up her third individual event win of the meet with the fastest time in the 200 IM (2:07.28) as the women once again had the three-fastest swims. Jungers was the runner up (2:10.81) and Alexander finished third (2:13.75).
James McGuire finished third on the men's side (1:57.38).
Lins de Mello won her third individual event of the day in the 500 free (5:06.12) with Zilch touching the wall second (5:07.74). On the men's side,
Brandon Crist won the event (4:39.54).
In the 200 fly,
Kayleigh Cannon won the women's competition (2:04.54) to sweep the butterfly events while Alexander was the runner up (2:08.62).
Ryan Sego won the men's competition (1:54.09).
Emma Bradley won the 1000 free (10:32.46) by more than 20 seconds on the women's side while Crist won the event (9:37.15) by more than 19 seconds on the men's side.
In the 50 free,
Caroline Ehlers won on the women's side (24.68).
Nick Ward led the Miami men with a second-place finish (21.19) on the men's side.
In the diving well,
Sam Wiedemann won both the men's 1-mtr dive (277.05) by more than 30 points and the 3-mtr dive (277.57) by 10 points.
Lexie Layne was the runner up in the women's 1-mtr dive (240.38) and
Maddie Folta was the runner up in the women's 30mtr dive (242.93).
The Miami men and women each ended the meet with a win in the 400 free relay. Underhill, Herb, Ehlers and Lins de Mello (3:33.68) won on the women's side while
Diego Valentim,
Nic Wamsley,
Ben Chatwin and Ward (3:04.39) got it done for the men.
The RedHawk women are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18 with a conference dual meet at Bowling Green at 1 p.m.
