Miami claimed the season opener on the road against Florida Gulf Coast.
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Miami University tennis team (1-0) started 2020 on the right foot as the RedHawks rolled through the host Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (0-2) on Thursday morning, 6-1.
Miami earned the first doubles point of the year, starting with a decisive 6-1 win from Milana Lysova and Makenzie Myers on court two. The duo of Melati Devi and Laura Rico sealed the opening point with a 6-4 win of their own as the third court finished with Miami's Brindtha Ramasamy and Lena Babusnki falling in a narrow 7-6 defeat.
Myers carried her dominant form over to the singles session as she took down the Eagles' Sofia Perez in quick 6-1, 6-3 fashion to point a second point on the board for the RedHawks. Rico followed suit with a dominating win to earn her first dual match victory in a Miami uniform, breezing past Atlantic Sun All-Conference player Sara Kelly 6-2, 6-2. The match win was then clinched by Lysova on court four, who also grabbed a straight-set win and made the score 4-0 Miami.
With the win clinched, Ramasamy would get her own impressive straight sets win, defeating FGCU's former ASUN Player of the Year Maja Ornberg 6-4, 7-6 on court one.
