MOREHEAD, Ky. – Following a pair of 1-0 losses, the Miami soccer team rallied to the occasion in the same situation to pull off a 2-1 double overtime win at Morehead State on Friday night.
Miami (1-3) overcame a late 1-0 deficit to pick up its first win of the season.
"We have been so proud of this group since preseason," head coach
Courtney Sirmans said. "This win was definitely what we needed to build our confidence. They played with so much grit! We created so many quality chances but were having trouble finding the back of the net. To go down a goal and fight back says so much about this group. The entire team worked so hard this week at training and to be rewarded with our first road win in two years is amazing!"
The first half was eventful in a lot of ways. An injury forced Morehead State into a goalkeeper change and both teams combined for 15 shots (8-7 MSU).
Izzie Vaccari was stellar in her action, posting six first-half stops to keep the contest scoreless at the break.
Things picked up in the second half as Miami fired 10 shots. However, it was MSU that would get on the board in the 72nd minute when Tia Williams found the back of the net.
Miami nearly tied things up two minutes later on a bid by
Kristina DeMarco, but it hit the crossbar. The Red & White's luck would change as
Olivia Winnett blasted a shot from just outside the 18 to the far corner for her first of the year to even it up at 1-1. MU outshot MSU by a 10-5 count in the second half and the contest wore on into overtime.
The Red & White took three of the four shots in the first overtime and nearly won it late when
Keara Kerr hit a crossbar, but the teams went into another overtime frame. This time, it was
Lyda Bogdanovitch who got behind the defense and scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway to give MU its first victory of the season.
Miami finished with a 23-16 shot advantage, including 16-8 after halftime to secure the win. MU also had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Vaccari stopped nine of 10 shots to pick up her first Miami victory in net.
