RedHawks Edge Ball State in 4-3 Thriller

Ramasamy clinches for the ‘Hawks with clutch win at first singles.

HAMILTON, Ohio - In yet another Mid-American Conference match that came down to the very last point, the Miami women's tennis team pulled through to claim a 4-3 win over the visiting Ball State Cardinals Friday as Brindtha Ramsamy earned the clinching point in the day's final match. Miami improves to 2-1 in the MAC (5-10 overall) while BSU slips to 1-2 in the conference and 12-4 overall.

The day's doubles matches looked as if they were destined to go down to the wire, but late Miami runs on all three courts pulled the RedHawks away and claimed the match's opening point for MU. On court three, Melati Devi and Emily Struble pulled away for a 6-3 win. Ramasamy and Milana Lysova won three straight games to win by the same 6-3 scoreline at first doubles and clinched the point for the 'Hawks. Priyana Kalita and Makenzie Myers had just taken a 5-4 lead at second doubles when their match was abandoned.

Ball State would come out swinging in the singles session, as the Cardinals took the first set on four of the six courts. They would convert one of these into a quick two-set win on court four, but Lysova's own 6-3, 6-3 straight-set victory on court two kept the RedHawks in front 2-1. Meanwhile, Struble and Devi would recover from their dropped first sets to put their matches into a deciding third set.

After a BSU win on court 5, Devi would close out her match in the third set and put the RedHawks on match point, 3-2. This left two matches in progress, both in their third set. The first of those, on court three, would fall to the Cardinals as they evened the match at three apiece. However, the RedHawks would take the final, winner-take-all match at first singles. Ramasamy, facing the Cardinal's number one singles player in Audrey Berger, broke a 3-3 deadlock in the final set to win her match and clinch the victory for Miami.

Full results are listed below.

Today's 4-3 decision means that all three of Miami's conference matches thus far have finished with that score.

Miami will continue its homestand on Sunday as the RedHawks host the Huskies of Northern Illinois. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Miami Tennis Courts in Oxford (venue subject to change due to weather).
