OXFORD - Miami University announced that Jon Schemmel has been promoted to Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Director of Development. Schemmel has served as Senior Director of Development and Associate Athletics Director for the past two years for the RedHawks.
"I am incredibly humbled and grateful to David Sayler for his leadership, this promotion and expanded role. It is a privilege to serve our student-athletes and relentlessly pursue our mission to graduate them as champions from Miami University," Schemmel said. "I also want to thank my staff for their incredible work the past two years. It has been fun to watch this group come together and I am excited to see what we can accomplish as a team moving forward."
Since arriving in Oxford, Schemmel served as a co-manager for the Graduating Champions Campaign, an $82 million initiative that exceeded its original $80 million goal and successfully closed this past spring.
Â
This past year, Schemmel oversaw an all-time high of $9.446 million in total annual cash raised. As part of that, Miami Athletics saw the Red & White Club surpass the $1 million mark for the first time ever. It raised $1.1 million total, 20% higher than any previous year. Individual sport excellence funds also saw a record in cumulative giving and a 210% increase over the average of the previous five years.
Â
Schemmel also created and added the most successful fundraising event in Miami Athletics history, hosting the inaugural "A Night for Red and White" Auction-Gala. The event raised $275,000 and brought more than 400 Miamians together in Cincinnati with Miami student-athletes, coaches and staff in a celebration of Miami University.
Prior to Miami, Schemmel spent the past six years at the University of South Dakota, the last five of which were as USD's Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development. He was part of the university's $250 million Onward Campaign, a seven-year campaign that has raised $240 million with 15 months remaining in it. He led all of USD's athletic development efforts, which raised more than $60 million since 2012. His fundraising efforts in a $74 million capital campaign led to successful projects to fund a 6,000 seat basketball arena, weight room, training room, track and soccer complex and the KSS Academic Center. As part of a strategic plan he created and implemented, he also grew USD's development staff from two to six full-time employees and nearly tripled the annual fund.
"Jon has done exceptional work helping us complete the Graduating Champions Campaign, tenaciously pursuing – and closing – new opportunities to help support our student-athletes and coaches," Jude Killy, Deputy Director of Athletics and Chief of Staff said. "In addition, Jon has done exceptional work hiring a tremendous team of talent and developing them. We are excited for he and his family to remain here in Oxford."
Prior to joining South Dakota, Schemmel was the account executive for Coyote Sports Properties, the marketing arm of Learfield Sports for USD athletics. In less than two years, Schemmel was part of a team that significantly pushed the growth of marketing and corporate sponsorships.
Formerly, Schemmel played four seasons of professional baseball, two with the New York Mets and two with the San Diego Padres organizations. He made it as high as AAA in 2007 before ending his career following the 2008 season. Collegiately, Schemmel played at the University of Minnesota for two years before transferring to Concordia, St. Paul, where he played for two seasons. Prior to arriving at USD, he lived in Minneapolis and worked in sales.
A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Schemmel graduated from San Diego State University in 2009, with a bachelor's degree in Public Administration.
Schemmel and his wife, Heidi, have one son, Jameson.
