The Miami men narrowly finish second, while the women finish in third.
DEKALB, Ill. - The Miami RedHawks contended at the top of the standings throughout the day on Saturday at the Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships in DeKalb, as the 'Hawks came away with top-three finishes in both races.
The Miami men were clipped by Eastern Michigan by a margin of just five points and took second place as a team, while the women ended the day in third place.
The men's race started off very well for Miami, as the RedHawks jumped out to an early lead at the 3.1K split of the 8K course. Charlie Harders and Anthony Camerieri were the biggest reasons for that, as the pair led the pack early on and came in at first and second at the split.
David Coffey established himself as the new Miami leader as he jumped into the top five before the next split, but Eastern Michigan began their charge and jumped into first as a team. The Eagles would hold on, and in the end Miami would come up just five points (64-59) shy of taking home a second consecutive conference title.
Coffey finished in fifth with a time of 25:35.9 to pace the RedHawks, posting the best MAC finish of his career. Camerieri joined Coffey in the top ten, as his run of 25:48.4 gave him a ninth-place finish. Senior Ryan Sharkey and redshirt freshman Alex Tam finished just seconds apart and came in 14th and 15th respectively, while Harders rounded out Miami's scoring five with a 21st-place run of 26:14.1
Coffey picked up First-Team All-MAC honors, while Camerieri and Sharkey were named to the second team.
Collectively, Miami's depth was evident as all nine RedHawks finished in the top 50 of the men's race, making them the only team to do so on the day.
Over in the women's race, Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan jumped out in front early while the RedHawks settled into third place. Claire Linn and Emma Bryant were the Miami leaders from the start, and remained the top two at the end of the race.
Bryant came in with a 10th-place finish, running a 22:16.7, while Linn was shortly behind in 14th with a time of 22:25.5. Sophomores McKenna Fry and Katie Vitou were MU's third and fourth finishers, coming in at 18th and 22nd respectively. Senior Carly Davis rounded out the RedHawk scoring with a time of 22:53.8 for 29th overall.
Both Bryant and Linn were named Second-Team All-MAC.
Eastern Michigan edged NIU at the end to complete to sweep the day's titles. Akron's Marc Migliozzi and Northern Illinois' Ashley Tutt were the individual champions.
"It was a tough day out there. We knew that we were going to have a couple battles on our hands; you never know what's going to happen when you step up to the line in a championship setting," Miami director of Cross Country/Track and Field Tom Chorny said after the meet. "This was one of the best fought battles I've seen in a long time, and it came down to each individual battle as runners crossed the line. Looking back, we just needed to be a little closer to the front and we would've avoided that."
"Our men's team is so talented right now but we are also very young. We needed a couple of guys to step up and run the way they prepared and ultimately that didn't happen. We sat out some of our top runners this year in order to bring them back for a strong fifth year, so I know we are all looking forward to what next season holds."
"Going into the women's race, we knew we had a lot of depth and just needed a few athletes to step up, just like the men, if we wanted to really fight for the win. Unfortunately, that didn't quite happen, but we still showed up and gave it a good shot and managed to get that top-three team finish."
"Looking back on the season, the championship race often comes down to how healthy you are; confidence can start building early but can easily get knocked off track if your body doesn't cooperate. We need to continue to focus on this so we can make sure we have a strong and confident team when it comes down to this championship part of the season."
The RedHawks will now look to regroup and move into the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, which will take place in two weeks on Nov. 15 in Wisconsin.
