Miami Breaks Four Pool Records in Sweep at Ball State

Both the Miami men and women dominated their first meet back after break.

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Miami University swimming and diving team swept the dual meet at Ball State on Tuesday. The men beat the Ball State men by a 236-63 margin and the RedHawk women beat the Ball State women by a 203-97 margin as Miami combined for 28 event wins in 32 total events.

The RedHawks broke four pool records in the win. In her first meet as a RedHawk, Camila Lins Mello broke the pool record in the 200 free (1:49.68). Izzy Herb broke the pool record in both the 100 back (56.45) and the 200 back (2:02.86). Iago Moussalem (1:51.12) and Kayky Mota (1:51.19) both broke the pool record in the 200 fly, finishing first and second.

In the 200 free, the Miami men and women grabbed the top three times on each side. Following Lins Mello's pool record on the women's side were Ella Moynihan and Molly Zilch in second and third, respectively. Nic Wamsley won the 200 free on the men's side (1:43.46) while Gordon Wheeler and Diego Valentim finished second and third, respectively.

The RedHawks dominated distance free, having the top-three finishers on both sides in the 500 free, the top three women's times in the 1000 free and the top two men's times in the 1000 free. In the 500 free, Duda Seifer (5:02.59) picked up her first event win as a RedHawk for the women while Gordon Wheeler (4:44.36) won the men's side. Emma Bradley, Moynihan, Brandon Crist and Austin Theobald also finished with top-three times. In the 1000 free, Bia Dizotti won her first event as a RedHawk (10:11.74) and Crist won the men's competition (9:35.46). Bradley, Seifer and James McGuire all had top-three times.

Miami had the top-three finishers in the 200 breast on both sides. Hannah Fuchs (2:21.77) beat out the women's competition while Noah Barr (2:08.03) won the men's. Anna Martin, Bri Alexander, Blake Brockman and Nikola Andjelic also finished in the top three. Fuchs (1:06.63) and Barr (57.63) also won the 100 breast. Andjelic finished second.

The RedHawks were strong in fly. Opposite two record-breaking performances on the men's side of the 200 fly, Kayleigh Cannon (2:05.15), Alexander and Dizotti secured the top-three places for the women. In the 100 fly, Abby Stone (57.87) and Moussalem (50.12) with Cannon, Peloquin and Chase Better finished in the top three.

In the 200 IM, Lins Mello (2:04.97) and Mota (1:53.25) earned the wins, while Fuchs, Alexandra Spaczay and McGuire were fast enough for the top three.

Opposite Herb's new records in the 100 and 200 back, James Wray swept the backstroke competition on the men's side, winning the 100 (51.79) and 200 (1:54.70) back. Peloquin was the runner up in the 100 back.

In sprint free, Wamsley and Nick Ward each earned a win and a runner-up finish in the 50 free and 100 free. Valentim took third in the 100 free. On the women's side, Lins Mello won the 100 free (51.36) and Anna Justinak finished second in the 50 free (24.82).

Harrison Moncino swept the men's diving competition, winning the 1-mtr dive (292.58) and the 3-mtr dive (310.05). Maddie Folta won the 1-mtr dive (252.60) and Amy Plocharczyk came in second in the 3-mtr dive (242.48).

In relays, Miami earned three more wins. In the 200 free relay, Wamsley, Ben Chatwin, Moussalem and Ward (1:25.26) won on the men's side while Moynihan, Herb, Justinak and Stone won the women's competition. Peloquin, Barr, Moussalem and Ward won the 200 medley (1:34.48) for the men. Herb, Fuchs, Cannon and Stone came in second in the 200 medley relay for the women.

The Miami women host Toledo on Saturday at 11 a.m. while the men will compete in an intrasquad meet during that time.
