New staff psychologist comes off stints with Minnesota, USA Curling, Macalester and Premier Sport Psychology.
OXFORD, Ohio – In an effort to improve all aspects of student-athlete well-being, Miami University Intercollegiate Athletics has added Dr. Troy Moles as a staff psychologist. He will join Dr. Jim Slager by providing the RedHawk student-athletes with clinical psychological services while Dr. Slager will continue to help enhance their on-field performance.
Dr. Moles comes to Oxford from Minneapolis, where he served numerous departments and organizations. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at Premier Sport Psychology that began in Aug. 2016 while spending the 2017-18 academic year as a psychologist with the University of Minnesota Athletic Department, USA Curling and Macalester College. He provided therapy and performance enhancement consultation to Minnesota and Macalester student-athletes, counseled people of all ages with Premier Sport Psychology and directed USA Curling Junior National team's high-performance program. Additionally, he presented at mental skills workshops, helped develop an online performance enhancement program, led the development of Macalester's intervention program and provided behavioral profiling assessment services to professional and collegiate teams.
"The Wellness Department, along with Director of Counseling Services John Ward, is very pleased to have Dr. Moles join the staff to help better serve our student-athletes," Assistant Athletic Director for Wellness Services Jennifer Beardslee said. "His past experiences as a student-athlete and working within the counseling departments at exceptional institutions such as University of Missouri, Pittsburgh and University of Minnesota will be a huge asset for us. The addition of this position within the Wellness Department continues to show the true commitment President Greg Crawford and David Sayler have to our student-athletes' welfare."
Prior to his stay in Minnesota, Dr. Moles served at the University of Missouri's Counseling Center as a psychological intern while working with the Tigers' athletic department's Mental Performance Team as a peer consultant. Before that, he spent time at the University of North Texas' Center for Sport Psychology (Aug. 2010-July 2015), Counseling and Testing Services (Jan. 2015-May 2015) and Psychological Clinic (Aug. 2011-Aug. 2014). He was also a counseling intern with Denton County Friends of the Family (Aug. 2013-June 2014). Those stints were preceded by work in the roles in the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (Oct. 2006-Aug. 2010) and Pitt's athletic department (Sept. 2008-Dec. 2009). His work has been published in numerous journals and he has also given several presentations in the sport psychology realm.
A former student-athlete himself, Dr. Moles helped Alleghany College win indoor and outdoor track and field conference titles all four years and gathered a combined five All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors. He graduated from Alleghany in 2006 with a Bachelor in Computer Science and Psychology. His Master's degree in Counseling Psychology was attained at Chatham University in 2010 and he finished his Ph.D at North Texas in 2016.
