OXFORD, Ohio - The RedHawk baseball team dropped a 6-2 decision to Central Michigan on Friday in the series opener at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
The defeat puts Miami at 29-17 (13-9 MAC) on the season while the Chippewas move to 22-26-1 (13-9 MAC).
The Red & White got off to a nice start with a single tally in the bottom of the first. Ross Haffey singled to give MU a one-out baserunner and got to second when Hayden Senger was hit by a pitch. Following the second out of the inning, Will Vogelgesang drove in Haffey with a ground-rule double to left center. Senger would have scored on the play but could only advance as far as third with the ground-rule double. Still, the `Hawks owned a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
Miami pushed the advantage to 2-0 when Cristian Tejada and Haffey opened the bottom of the third with back-to-back doubles to the gap in left.
After being held scoreless over the first five innings, the Chippewas finally broke through in the sixth to take the lead. A two-run homer and an RBI single handed CMU a 3-2 margin.
The Chippewas added three more runs with a plethora of base hits in the top of the ninth, making it 6-2.
RedHawk starting pitcher Spencer Mraz went 5.1 innings and was tagged for three runs on seven hits. Shane Smith was the only Miami hurler to appear in relief. He tossed the final three frames, also surrendering three runs on seven hits.
The series continues Saturday with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
