DeKALB, ILL. - The Miami baseball team won its series finale over Northern Illinois, 5-1, on Sunday thanks to some late scoring and a complete game on the mound from senior Gus Graham.
With the victory, the RedHawks improve to 23-13 on the season, including 9-6 in Mid-American Conference play.
Graham gave Miami a great start as he went the distance, his first career complete game. He allowed just the one run on five hits while striking out seven.
NIU's lone run came in the fourth when it converted on a safety squeeze with the bases loaded.
The RedHawks had their chances over the next several innings but the Huskies continued to hold them off. That was until the top of the eighth when they exploded for all five of their runs. Hayden Senger singled, stole second, got to third on an error and subsequently scored on a wild pitch to knot things up at 1-all. Back-to-back base hits from Parker Massman and Kyle Winkler put runners on second and third to set up a Will Vogelgesang fielder's choice as Massman beat a throw home to give MU its first lead at 2-1. Cal Elvers then broke it open with a pinch-hit, two-run double to center field. Adrian Texidor provided further insurance when he drove in Elvers with a base hit to left, pushing the Red & White lead to 5-1.
Miami is on the road to begin the week as it travels to Butler on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. first pitch. The `Hawks are then home for the weekend to host rival Ohio for a three-game series that gets underway on Friday at 5 p.m.
