Miami Falls To Ohio

Box ScoreOXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University softball team lost to Ohio by a 10-4 margin in the first game of the three-game series this weekend. The RedHawks are now 19-20 overall and 6-9 in conference play.

Courtney Vierstra started in the circle for the 20th time this season. Vierstra pitched three complete innings, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters. Taylor Rathe replaced Vierstra to start the fourth inning. Rathe gave up four hits to score five runs, only three of which were earned. Rathe struck out two and walked five.
Ohio took an early one-run lead in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the third on a pair of singles, a walk and a home run.
Haeley Tran led off with a single in the fourth inning. Ashton Slone reached base on a fielder's choice that saw Tran forced out at second. Kat Lee reached on error with two outs. Lee and Slone were stranded at first and third, respectively.
Lizzie Bollinger hit a lead-off double in the fifth inning but three-straight outs left her on second.
Ohio extended its lead to 7-0 in the sixth inning on one hit, one walk, one hit-by-pitch and a pair of errors.
The RedHawks scored three in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 7-3 game. Slone singled followed by a walk to Johniann Wahl. Lee hit her second home run of the season to drive in three runs. With those three RBI, Lee moves into 10th all-time in Miami softball history with 85 RBI.
Ohio responded with a three-run home run in the seventh inning to bring the score to 10-3.
Miami tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Mackenzie Moore led off with a walk, followed by a bunt single from Wurts. Slone earned the RBI on a groundout.
UP AHEAD
Miami and Ohio close out the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Prior to the first pitch, the RedHawks will honor this year's senior class.
