
Miami Places 10th at MAC Indoors

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Miami University track & field finished the 2018 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday. They placed 10th with 33 total points. Eastern Michigan swept both the men's and women's Championships with 179 points and 154 points, respectively.
The RedHawks, who had 12 points after the first day of competition, bounced back and scored 21 on day two. Senior Alesha Vovk got things started, recording a 5:00.65 in the mile that gained Miami two points. Vovk, who finished seventh place, was joined by Alex Cameron and Claire Linn, who took 17th and 20th, respectively.

Miami racked up 10 total points in the 400m thanks to Olivia Bechtel and Emily Hooker. The pair, who qualified for the finals after placing top-eight in Friday's preliminaries, finished third place and fifth place, respectively. Bechtel's finish was good for six points, while Hooker picked up four.

Senior Maria Scavuzzo, who earned six points with her third-place finish in Friday's 5000m, tacked on three more in the 3000m on Saturday. She crossed in 9:44.35 to place sixth.
"Maria Scavuzzo put together two of the best days of competition that I've seen from her yet," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Tom Chorny.
Last to score points on the track was the 4x400m squad of Kalliopi Kountouri, Emily Hooker, Sarah Bruns, and Olivia Bechtel. Together, they recorded a 3:45.07 that placed them third and got them six points.
Underclassmen contributed to 18 of Miami's 33 points on the weekend.
"As a program, we are still in a rebuilding stage," said Chorny. "But we have a lot of young talent and are excited for what's to come."
The RedHawks next turn their focus to the outdoor season. Miami will send athletes to Cincinnati, North Carolina State, and Stanford the weekend of Mar. 30.
