Dade City, Fla.- The Miami University golf team kicked off the spring portion of its season by earning a pair of victories at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play on Monday. The RedHawks opened the tournament strong with a win over eighth seed Loyola, defeating the Ramblers 5-1. In the semifinals, Miami faced fourth-seed Ball State and defeating the Cardinals 4-2. Miami is set to battle third-seed Toledo for the championship on Tuesday.
The RedHawks looked dominant in the morning after shaking off the cobwebs of the long winter. Senior Patrick Flavin defeated Justin LaFrance 4&3 with three holes remaining, while freshman Charlie Nikitas cruised to a 6&4 victory over Ryan Magee. Sophomore Cam Solomon downed Orion Yamat 2-Up after a close contest forced the match all-square seven times.
Both redshirt junior Brian Ohr and freshman Jack Mortell defeated their opponents 1-Up, solidifying the RedHawks victory over the Ramblers. After a hard-fought battle against Loyola's Tyler Anderson, freshman Jack Herceg was defeated 2&1. The Red and White were then set to face the winner of fourth-seed Ball State and fifth-seed Drake, of which the Cardinals came out with a 5-1 victory.
Flavin continued his solid performance in the semifinals, earning his second point of the day after defeating Johnny Watts 3&2. Nikitas, and Mortell's matches were decided without need for playing an 18th hole, with Nikitas defeating Timothy Wiseman 5&4, while Mortell downed CJ Jones 4&3. Ohr also came out with a 1-Up victory over Michael Vandeventer. Both Solomon and Herceg dropped their matches, but the RedHawks prevailed.
