Miami Falls To Duke In NCAA Tournament First Round

The RedHawks fell by a 1-0 margin.

DURHAM, N.C. – The Miami University field hockey team (16-7) fell to No. 3 Duke by a 1-0 margin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. The RedHawks were shut out for only the second time all season.

Duke earned the first penalty corner of the game in the second minute, but Mariona Heras registered her second defensive save of the NCAA Tournament to keep the Blue Devils off of the scoreboard. During the seventh minute, Duke earned a pair of penalty corners but Maddie Passarella recorded her first save of the afternoon.

Leonor Berlie took the RedHawks' first shot in the ninth minute of play but Sammi Steele turned it aside.

In the 13th minute, Miami earned a penalty corner but the resulting shot from Berlie was blocked in front of the cage.

Duke got onto the scoreboard first during the 22nd minute of play. Olivia Sahaydak received a long pass on the right side of the circle and put it into the far side of the cage.

With eight minutes remaining, Passarella turned aside three shots back-to-back to continue an inspiring first half performance in the cage.

With less than five minutes to play in the first half, the RedHawks earned another penalty corner but Paula Portugal's shot was blocked.

After the first half of play, Miami trailed 1-0.

Midway through the second half, Duke earned a penalty corner. Passarella came up with a save on the second shot to keep the game within one.

With seven minutes to play, Duke earned back-to-back penalty corners but a pair of shots wide kept the score the same.

Portugal and Berlie led the RedHawks squad with two shots each. Passarella recorded 13 saves, a season high.
