BOSTON, Mass. – The Miami University field hockey team (16-6, 6-0 MAC) shut out No. 22 Boston University by a 2-0 margin in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday.
This is Miami's 11th shutout of the season, which leads Division I programs in the country. This is
Maddie Passarella's ninth solo shutout of the season.
The Terriers earned the first penalty corner of the game after 15 minutes of play but the resulting shot went wide.
Noor Breedijk took Miami's first shot of the game in the 25 th minute of play but the backhander went wide.
After 35 minutes, the game was locked at zero with Boston having a 3-1 edge in shots.
Mariona Heras put the RedHawks on the scoreboard first with her fifth goal of the season during the 55th minute of play.
Paula Portugal passed the ball to Heras inside the circle and Heras took a backhand shot to beat Kathleen Keegan.
Just one minute later, Miami took a 2-0 lead as
Morgan Sturm scored her second goal of the season.
Estel Roig took the ball into the circle and took the shot. Sturm tipped Roig's shot past Keegan.
With less than nine minutes to play, Boston University earned a penalty corner.
Kirsten McNeil jumped to get her stick on the ball and register a defensive save to keep the Terriers off of the scoreboard.
With six minutes to play, Boston University pulled Keegan to get an extra field player. Miami kept possession for much of the remainder of the game to prevent Boston University from getting offensive chances.
Miami will play against No. 3 Duke in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at noon.
