Volleyball Sweeps Radford 3-0

COLUMBIA, S.C. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" The Miami University volleyball team got off to a dominating start at the Carolina Classic with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-16) win over Radford Friday morning. The RedHawks improve to 5-4 on the season, while the Highlanders suffer their first loss and are 6-1.
Miami finished with a .313 attack percentage, making only 11 errors the entire match. The Red and White forced Radford into 21 attack errors, as the Highlanders only had a .068 attack percentage.
Kills from senior right side hitter Katie Coverdale and junior outside hitter Stela Kukoc got the 'Hawks moving immediately in set one as they took a 4-0 lead. Radford tied the score at seven, but several attack errors, followed by kills from sophomore middle hitter Margaret Payne, senior right side hitter Katie Tomasic and Kukoc were part of an 8-3 run that gave the RedHawks a 15-10 advantage and forced a Highlander timeout. Out of the break Radford responded with a 4-1 run to close within two. Miami retook control with a 6-2 run that made it 22-16. A kill from Kukoc would finish off a 25-19 win.
Trailing 2-5 early in set two, kills from senior outside hitter Olivia Rusek and Kukoc, along with two kills from junior middle hitter Courtney Simons put Miami on top, 6-5. Tied at seven, a kill from Payne and a service ace by redshirt junior setter Mackenzie Zielinski was part of six straight points that put the RedHawks in front, 13-7. Leading 18-13, Tomasic had two kills and a block as Miami closed on a 7-2 run to take a 25-15 win.
Radford built a 9-6 lead to begin set three, forcing the RedHawks to call timeout. Out of the break, two kills from Payne and two service aces by freshman setter Morgan Seaman were part of a 7-2 run that put Miami on top, 13-11. The Highlanders scored the next point, but a kill from Simons and a service ace by Kukoc got the Red and White's offense moving again. Leading 21-16, two kills from Payne, one from Coverdale and a service ace by senior libero Maeve McDonald finished off a 25-16 victory and gave the RedHawks a 3-0 win in the match.
Kukoc led a balanced offensive attack with nine kills. Payne and Tomasic had eight kills apiece, while Coverdale finished with six. Zielinski led Miami with 21 assists, while McDonald had 11 digs.
The RedHawks continue play at the Carolina Classic when they take on host South Carolina later Friday at 7 p.m.
