
Red and White Solid in Season Debut

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Miami University cross country kicked off their 2017 season at the Indiana Open on Saturday.
The men began the fall campaign with a bang by comfortably beating Ohio State by 34 points and smashing Wisconsin by 80 points. With 60 points, the 'Hawks were just ten points behind second-place Minnesota.
Six RedHawks placed in the top 20 in the men's race, including sophomores Christopher Torpy and Sean Torpy. Chris took seventh with a 25:13.0 and his brother, Sean, finished seven-tenths of a second behind him with a 25:13.7 - both go down as the best scores of their young careers. Seniors Jake Brumfield and Ben Metzger took 12th and 15th, respectively. Brumfield finished with a 25:29.3 and Metzger recorded a 25:38.8. Brumfield's mark is a new personal record.
Maria Scavuzzo was the top finisher on a women's team that placed fifth with 116 points. Seniors Maria Scavuzzo and Alesha Vovk were the two scorers who placed in the top 20. Scavuzzo, looking to follow-up her NCAA Championship appearance from last year, turned in an 18:03.9 - the best 5K time of her career - to take 11th. Vovk also posted a career-best, running an 18:16.0 to place 20th.
The next stop for the Red and White will be Nashville, Tenn., for the Commodore Classic. The women's race will begin at 10 a.m. and be followed shortly thereafter by the men's.
