OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University field hockey team was edged by Indiana 3-2 in overtime on a hat trick by Maddie Latino. The RedHawks drop to 2-4 on the season and the Hoosiers improve to 4-2.
"It was a good game of hockey," said head coach Inako Puzo. "We played very well and competed hard. We can't let the scoreboard fool us. It wasn't the result we wanted but it showed a lot of good things and we can keep working forward together."
Miami trailed in shots 13-11 while penalty corners were tied at eight per team.
Kirsten McNeil opened scoring with her first of the season off a pass from Leonor Berlie in the 17th minute of play.
The Hoosiers tied the game in the 33rd minute when Maddie Latino netted her third of the season off a long pass from Elle Hempt.
Allie Grace Joyner put in a rebound for her second goal of the season during the 55th minute of play.
Latino tied the game again for Indiana during the 59th minute off a rebound on a penalty corner. This was her second goal of the afternoon and fourth of the season.
In overtime, Latino put in another rebound on a penalty corner to give the Hoosiers a win. This is Latino's first hat trick of her collegiate career.
"Today we played Miami hockey," said senior back Makenna Colby. "We played to win. We worked hard together and fought for 70-plus minutes. We didn't get the result we wanted but we are happy with the process. We can build on this as we enter the MAC games."
Berlie led both teams with six shots. Maddie Passarella made five saves in net.
The RedHawks begin conference play as they travel to Ohio University for a Friday game at 3 p.m. Miami plays at Appalachian State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
