Hunter put together the best performance of his young collegiate career at the Indiana State Twilight over the weekend. The freshman sprinter claimed the 100m dash after clocking a time of 10.45. That performance shot him up the MAC rankings, putting him second among the sprinters across the league and putting him in contention for a spot at the NCAA East Region Preliminary with a regional ranking of 49th. His first-place finish was his second of the season.
This is the first time this season and in his career that Hunter has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week.
Mortensen turned in an outstanding performance this weekend, powering the RedHawks to a series victory over Akron to close conference play. For the weekend, she went 2-0 and did not allow a run, striking out eight and only giving up four hits over 12 innings of work. On Saturday, Mortensen tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout, leading Miami to a 3-0 victory. She struck out four Zips and only walked two, retiring eight of the final nine batters she faced. On Sunday, she entered a tied game in the third and proceeded to dominate, allowing the RedHawks' offense to pull away for a 5-1 victory. After surrendering a single to her first batter, Mortensen sat down the next 12 Akron batters before yielding a two-out single in the top of the seventh. For the second consecutive day, she threw a two-hitter and struck out four, but did not walk a batter in her five innings on the mound.
This is the first time this season and in her career that Mortensen has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The final Miami Athletes of the Week of the season will be announced on Monday, May 15.
