SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Miami University track and field team put together yet another stellar performance at this weekend's Meyo Invitational. Just two weeks away from the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, the RedHawks came out of Notre Dame with 16 personal bests, two broken school records, and one NCAA Championships berth. Final results are available here.
The Red and White traveled a large team with them to South Bend, ready to make an impact. As has been the theme this indoor season, it was the shot put squad that got it started. Amelia Strickler grabbed first place and an NCAA berth with a toss of 56-2, surpassing her previously-set school record of 54-10.25. Arionna Darling took sixth with a 49-7.
As she has done all season, Alexus Jimson-Miller impressed in the 60m hurdles. The senior worked her way through preliminaries and the semi-finals before taking seventh in the finals with an 8.40 - a personal-best that also now stands as the fastest in Miami history, just ahead of Erin Connolly's record 8.46 set at the 2003 MAC Championships.
Coming off injury, Emily Hooker looked good in her brief appearances at last week's Indiana Relays. This week, she recorded a personal best in addition to placing herself second all-time amongst Miami's 600m record holders. Her time of 1:33.60 ranks second only to Kathie Wollney's 1:32.99 set last season. The time earned her fifth at the Meyo.
Maria Scavuzzo did not disappoint in her first race since appearing in the NCAA Cross Country Championship in the fall. A time of 16:37 placed her fourth at the Meyo and second all-time in Miami's record books for the 5000m run.
A number of other 'Hawks recorded PRs too: Ben Metzger ran a 14:48.44 in the 5000m; Stephen Biebelhausen (8:22.20) and Matthew Bromley (8:36.14) bested their previous marks in the 3000; Andrew Dusing's 4:05.17 one-mile time stands as a new PR for the senior; Allison Klonne recorded a 5:00.58 in the women's one mile; Jonathan Fee recorded a 1:55.46 in the 800m; Aaron Muresan (50.59) and Olivia Bechtel (56.65) set personal bests in the men's and women's 400m, respectively; Jake Owens recorded a PR with a 22.55 in the 200m; and Ashley Frahm recorded a personal-best in the weight throw with a 57-4.75.
"This is a really good step forward for our team", said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Tom Chorny said. "We are looking to carry this momentum into the next two weekends as we prepare for the MAC Championships."
The weekend of February 10-11 will be one of those two weekends standing between the 'Hawks and the conference championship meet, as they will head to Allendale, Mich., for the GVSU Big Meet.
