MAC Championship Final Results
YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Miami University track and field team concluded their indoor season by finishing ninth at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. After scoring 14 points on Friday, the RedHawks tallied 23 on Saturday. The final standings were tight, as only eight points separated fourth and 11th place.
"Just like every other team in the conference, we are looking at places where we could easily have made up the difference," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Tom Chorny. "We left some points out there, but we also picked up a few that we weren't supposed to get."
In her first MAC Championship appearance, freshman Olivia Bechtel placed fourth in the 400m with a time of 55.77 to earn the Red and White five points. The best time of Bechtel's indoor season, her 55.77 pushed her up to eighth in the conference for the event.
"Bechtel stood out," remarked Chorny. "She's going to be a force to reckoned with in the future."
In the 60m hurdles, Alexus Jimson-Miller placed eighth in the finals with an 8.81.
Maria Scavuzzo ran a 9:39.73 in the 3000m to take fourth and earn the 'Hawks five points. With that in addition to her fifth-place finish in Friday's 5000m, the senior accounted for nine of the RedHawks' points on the weekend. Carly Davis also ran in the 3000m and recorded a season-best 9:53.79 that placed her in ninth.
The relay team of Kalliopi Kountouri, Emily Hooker, Morgan Rice, and Olivia Bechtel were the highest point-getters on Saturday, snatching six points with their third-place finish in the 4x400m. The foursome completed the relay in just 3:47.34. They were just two seconds from setting a new school record.
Martha Szekely was able to grab three points for Miami in the field, finishing sixth in weight throw with a 58-9.5. The toss counted as a career-high for the senior.
Chorny concluded his thoughts on the weekend by saying, "We know we have some great things going on with our team and look forward to continuing our growth as we step into the outdoor season."
Amelia Strickler, who took second in shot put on Friday, is currently waiting to see if she will qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The senior's 56-2 at the Meyo Invitational earlier in February broke a Miami record and has placed her as the 11th-ranked shot putter in the country, per the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
"We look forward to supporting Amelia as she heads to the NCAA Championships at Texas A&M to represent the Miami RedHawks," said Chorny.
As Coach Chorny stated, the men's and women's teams now turn their attention to the outdoor season. The 'Hawks will kick off the spring on March 31st with a trip to California for the Stanford Invite.
