OXFORD, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" For their performances last week, freshman men's basketball guard Jalen Adaway and junior field hockey midfielder/forward Paula Portugal are Miami Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 6-12.
Adaway recorded a double-double in his debut game for Miami, leading the RedHawks to a come-from-behind 55-54 win over Fordham. That included hitting the game winning layup with four seconds left as Miami overcame a 12-point second half deficit and a six-point deficit over the last 2:10. Adaway was the main catalyst for the comeback, scoring six straight points after the Red and White fell behind 40-28 midway through the second half.
This is the first time this season and in his career that Adaway has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week.
Portugal was instrumental in helping the RedHawks earn their first NCAA tournament win in Miami field hockey program history. On Wednesday, the RedHawks topped Stanford 2-1. Both of Miami's goals came from the stick of Portugal. On Sunday, Portugal recorded an assist in a hard-fought game against Duke. Portugal concludes the 2017 season as the leading scorer of the MAC and one of only three players in the country to score 50 points. She registered a career-high 51 points this season.
This is the fifth time this season and seventh time in her career that Portugal has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. It is the four consecutive week she has earned this honor.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced on Monday, Nov. 20.
