AKRON, Ohio - Akron scored in the 33rd minute and withstood some Miami chances as the soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on Thursday night.
The Zips (2-13-2, 1-7-1 Mid-American) snapped the RedHawks' (2-13-1, 2-6-1 MAC) two-game winning streak with the result.
The first half featured play mostly at midfield with only a combined two shots over the first 30 minutes and changed. Akron drew first blood in the 33rd minute when Ally Brown fed Raechal Eck in the middle, where she slid a left-footed shot just inside the left post to go up 1-0. Miami got a corner kick in the 40th minute, but nothing came of it as it trailed by a goal at the break.
After being held to a single shot attempt in the first half, Miami fired off three in the first few minutes of the second half, however two were off the mark and one was blocked by the defense. The Red and White continued to press for offense and created a couple quality chances in the latter stages of the half. Kat Zalar got a step down the left side in the 70th minute, but Amani Jiu dove to her right to make the save. A free kick in the 82nd minute found Katie Alexander's head right in front of the keeper's box, but the shot went just over the net as Akron held on for the win.
Miami outshot Akron by a 7-6 margin while the Zips held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Patricia Koutoulas stopped two shots for the Red and White while Jiu made one save for the shutout.
The RedHawks wrap up their road trip on Sunday when they take on Buffalo at noon.
