KETTERING, Ohio ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" For the first time since the 2016 Hoosier Collegiate, the Miami University golf team has a tournament title, taking the championship at the Dayton Flyer Intercollegiate. With tough conditions for all teams, the RedHawks shot a seven-over par round of 291 on Tuesday to take the tournament title at eight-over par. Ohio State was the runner-up at 13-over par.
"Overall I think we handled playing with the lead really well today," said head coach Zac Zedrick. "It's a lot tougher to do that than just be in the mix and I think we drew on some past experiences of being in the final pairing in the fall. It was tough out there today, but we found a way to get it done. I'm really proud of the way we finished the fall for sure."
Senior Patrick Flavin continued his remarkable run as he captured his fourth tournament title in five events. He shot a one-over par 72 in his final round to finish the tournament at one-under par. He finished in a tie with Beau Breault of Eastern Michigan, which necessitated a playoff. After both player scored par on the first hole, they made their way to 18. Breault finished with a par, but Flavin hit his second shot to within four feet and drained the putt for the birdie and the win.
"I've done my best to step back and appreciate what Pat is doing, and I hope he's doing the same thing," said Zedrick.
With his eighth tournament victory, Flavin is now Miami's all-time leader in individual wins, breaking the record of seven set by Maarten van den Berg (1993-97).
Two RedHawk freshman joined Flavin in the top 10 with their best collegiate finishes. Jack Herceg shot a final round 73 to finish in fourth place at one-over par. After an even-par 71, Charlie Nikitas placed eighth at five-over par.
Redshirt junior Brian Ohr shot a final round 75 and finished tied for 75th at 10-over par, while sophomore Cam Solomon shot an 80 and finished tied for 32nd at 11-over par.
Playing as an individual, freshman Jack Mortell shot a final round 73 and tied for 39th at 13-over par. This concludes the fall portion of the competition season for Miami. The season resumes Feb. 12-13, 2018 when the RedHawks travel to Dade City, Florida for the annual Earl Yestingsmeir Match Play event.
