Oct. 17, 2017 OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University Director of Athletics
David Sayler has tabbed
Jon Schemmel as the RedHawks' Senior Director of Development/Associate AD.
Schemmel spent the past six years at the University of South Dakota, the last five of which were as USD's Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development. He was part of the university's $250 million Onward Campaign, a seven-year campaign that has raised $240 million with 15 months remaining in it. He led all of USD's athletic development efforts, which raised over $60 million since 2012. His fundraising efforts in a $74 million capital campaign led to successful projects to fund a 6,000 seat basketball arena, weight room, training room, track and soccer complex and the KSS Academic Center. As part of a strategic plan he created and implemented, he also grew USD's development staff from two to six full-time employees and nearly tripled the annual fund.
"Our family couldn't be more excited about the opportunity to join the Miami RedHawks' family as well as the Oxford community," Schemmel said. "I look forward to serving Miami and working with the Advancement and Athletic Department teams. The vision and excitement Tom Herbert and
David Sayler have for this university and its athletic programs is second-to-none, and I feel fortunate to be a part of it. I look forward to meeting as many friends, fans and alums as soon as possible."
Prior to joining South Dakota, Schemmel was the account executive for Coyote Sports Properties, the marketing arm of Learfield Sports for USD athletics. In less than two years, Schemmel was part of a team that significantly pushed the growth of marketing and corporate sponsorships.
"We are very excited to have someone with Jon's fundraising experience and passion for Intercollegiate Athletics join our team," said Brad Bundy, Senior Associate Vice President and Campaign Director. "We look forward to Jon helping continue the momentum and success we have built for Miami Athletics, and are thrilled to welcome him to the Miami family."
Formerly, Schemmel played four seasons of professional baseball, two with the New York Mets and two with the San Diego Padres organizations. He made it as high as AAA in 2007 before ending his career following the 2008 season. Collegiately, Schemmel played at the University of Minnesota for two years before transferring to Concordia, St. Paul, where he played for two seasons. Prior to arriving at USD, he lived in Minneapolis and worked in sales.
"Jon has proven to be an extremely successful fundraiser," said
Jude Killy, Deputy Athletics Director. "On top of that, he brings great energy and enthusiasm and we are excited to have him on our team."
A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Schemmel graduated from San Diego State University in 2009, with a bachelor's degree in Public Administration.
Schemmel and his wife, Heidi, Schemmel have one son, Jameson.
