LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Miami University competed at Pre-Nationals on the campus of the University of Louisville Saturday. The race wrapped up another two-meet weekend for the 'Hawks.
Racing first, the men's team finished 22nd out of 41 schools with 603 points. Crossing first was sophomore Sean Torpy in 52nd place with a 24:02.3. The mark smashes his previous personal record (and the former team record for the season) of 25:05.0 by over a full minute. All five scoring runners topped that season-best mark.
The next RedHawk to cross was sophomore David Coffey, whose 24:36.6 surpassed his PR by nearly 35 seconds. He took 118th individually. Not far behind him was Jake Brumfield, who also surpassed the team record with a 24:47.6 that netted him 139th. Christopher Torpy was right on his heels, crossing in 24:48.0 to rank 141st. Sophomore Bradley Davis was the final scoring runner for Miami. He completed the course in 25:02.3 and finished 171st.
Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Tom Chorny believes that, despite not having a great team finish, the individual times speak volumes on the group's potential. All but one of the 12 RedHawk men set new personal records.
"The results of this race have opened a new door for us," said Chorny. "They needed to prove to themselves that they can run this fast, and now they know that, with better race execution, they can take another big step forward as a team by the end of the year."
The women were paced by sophomore Carly Davis, whose 21:09.0 placed her in 91st. She bested her previous record by 25 seconds. Senior Maria Scavuzzo finished behind her, marking the first time this fall Scavuzzo did not lead Miami's women's team. Scavuzzo finished 121st with a 21:22.9. Alesha Vovk continued her string of solid races by finishing with a 21:50.5 - just four seconds off her personal best - to end up 168th. Just seven seconds behind her came Sarah Starrett, whose 21:57.3 topped her previous best by a whole 25 seconds. The final scorer for the 'Hawks was Allison Klonne. She took 195th with a 22:07.2.
Speaking on the women's team's performance, Chorny said, "We're definitely on the right track, but we need the whole group to show up to compete on race day."
Miami will return home on Oct. 28 to host the Mid-American Conference Championship. It will be their second home meet this fall after not having one for nearly three years.
