
Miami Men and Women Fall to Purdue

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami Swimming and Diving team fell to Purdue by a 194-105 margin for the women and a 233-67 margin for the men. The RedHawks fall to 0-1 on the season and the Boilermakers improve to 1-0.
"I think we did a great job," said head coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron. "I knew and we knew that this was going to be a tough competition for us, but I would rather start our season off swimming against a team like this, a Big 10 team, especially a team like Purdue."
Both the RedHawks' men and women notched numerous first and second place finishes.
Leading the divers was red-shirted senior Pei Lin. Lin won the women's 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Her 3-meter score of 348.97 was 52 more points than the second-place finisher and her 1-meter score was 32 points more than the second-place finisher.
Sophomore Izzy Herb led the women for backstroke, winning the 200 Back (2:03.39) and finishing second in the 100 Back (56.96). Freshman Martin Nitzken led the men for backstroke, placing second in the 200 Back (1:52.30).
Sophomore Iago Moussalem do Amaral led the men for butterfly, coming in second in both the 100 Fly (49.91) and 200 Fly (1:50.60), each finishing less than a half second behind the winner. Junior Peyton Mosbaugh led the women for butterfly, placing second in the 100 Fly (56.96).
Senior Holly Schuster finished second in the 200 Breast (2:18.57) and 200 IM (2:06.50).
Both the men and women had a strong showing in freestyle. Leading the way for the Miami women for short distances was red-shirted senior Elise Campbell, winning the 50 Free (23.53) and finishing second in the 100 Free (51.46). Freshman Gordon Wheeler finished second in the 200 Free (1:41.71) to lead the men's effort. Junior Ella Moynihan and sophomore Emma Bradley both placed second in longer-distance freestyle, 500 Free (4:58.27) and 1000 Free (10:09.67), respectively. The strong showing in freestyle was capped off with a runner-up finish of the women's 400 Free Relay. Juniors Abby Stone and Allison Pierce, along with Campbell and Moynihan made up the quickest Miami women's 400 Free Relay team.
The Miami women travel to Akron on Saturday, October 28 for a 2 p.m. meet.
