Sept. 29, 2016 OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University Director of Strength and Conditioning Paul Harker has begun filling out his staff with a couple of hires that were announced on Friday.
New to the RedHawks' strength and conditioning department is Pam January, who joins Luke Kelly as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. January will work with the RedHawks' soccer and combined swimming and diving and track and field/cross country programs while Kelly is assisting the softball, field hockey and tennis training regimens. Both will also assist the football team's strength and conditioning as well.
"I am extremely excited to have both Pam and Luke join the Miami strength staff," Harker said. "They each bring a unique perspective and skill set that will undoubtedly benefit the experience of our student-athletes. Pam comes from a very well-respected strength program in Wayne State, and her experience as a Division I basketball player gives her the ability to relate first-hand to the demands and expectations placed upon our kids. As an alumnus, Luke understands firsthand what Love & Honor and Graduating Champions is all about. It's always a great feeling to be able to bring one of our own back into the fold."
Prior to arriving in Oxford, January spent the summer as a strength and conditioning coach for the Mahtomedi High School volleyball team, which followed her two-year stint as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. There, she was responsible for implementing strength and conditioning programs for the Warriors' volleyball, tennis, men's and women's swimming and diving and men's and women's fencing teams. She conducted strength and conditioning tests that included power and Olympic exercises, body fat percentages, and sport specific agility and conditioning workouts to monitor progress. January also worked with the WSU football, baseball and men's and women's basketball teams.
Before going to graduate school at Wayne State, January also served as a strength and conditioning coach at Richfield High School in Richfield, Minnesota.
A former Division I basketball player at South Dakota, January earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of South Dakota in Health Sciences in May, 2013. She achieved her Masters of Education in Kinesiology from Wayne State in May, 2016.
Kelly returns to Miami after earning four varsity letters with the football team, where he was a part of the 2010 MAC Championship and GoDaddy.com Bowl winning squad. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in May, 2013, he served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Turpin High School from 2013 until 2016. He also began serving as a CrossFit Coach in 2015.
