OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support Services Craig Bennett announced the addition of Katherine Lawrence and Nancy Stewart to his staff. Both take over as Academic Coordinators/Learning Specialists.
"The passion for student success I found in Katherine and Nancy is contagious," Bennett said. "They are a great addition to the Athletic Department in assisting our students with the mission of Graduating Champions. If you hire people whose passion intersects with the job, they will excel at an unfathomable level of work performance."
Lawrence joins the staff after spending the past two years with Louisville's academic services office while completing graduate school. She worked primarily with the football team advising student-athletes on choosing majors and sharing student-athlete academic progress with coaches and professors. She also facilitated study hall for newcomers and monitored degree progress for over 20 student-athletes in her second year at UL. She also spent time working with the ticket office. A native of Ajax, Ontario, Lawrence played four years for Kent State's soccer team, serving as co-captain for the team as a senior and also sitting as vice president of Kent State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2013-14.
"I am very excited to be part of the RedHawk family and the great tradition of academic excellence our student-athletes consistently reach," Lawrence said. "Being able to work in the same conference I played in is pretty awesome, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone over the next couple of weeks."
Stewart returns to Oxford following an extensive academic career at various universities. She spent five years at the University of Maryland, lecturing for three years and serving as the program coordinator for the Honors Humanities Program for two more. In the program coordinator role, Stewart advised roughly 30 students each semester on two-year research projects and academic planning. While serving as a lecturer at the beginning of her tenure in College Park, Stewart also was an instructor at Prince George's Community College for two years. Before moving to Maryland, she spent two years at Ohio State, where she was an instructor and writing center consultant.
"As a proud Miami graduate, I'm delighted to return to campus to help student-athletes excel in the classroom and thrive as integral parts of the scholarly community," Stewart said. "I'm especially thrilled to be part of such an enthusiastic and dedicated staff."
Lawrence graduated from Kent State with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Business in 2014, while receiving a Master of Science in Sport Administration from Louisville in 2016. Stewart graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Science in English Literature from Miami in 2005 and received Master of Arts degrees from both St. John's College (Western Philosophy; 2006) and Ohio State (English Literature; 2009).
