OXFORD, Ohio - Thirteen student-athletes from Miami's spring sports were recognized by the Mid-American Conference as Distinguished Scholar Athletes, the league office announced on Friday.
Topping the list of RedHawks honored were the women's outdoor track and field program, which landed four competitors on the list in Laura Bess, Alexus Jimson-Miller, Martha Szekely and Kathie Wollney. Men's outdoor track and field (Andrew Dusing and Joe Stewart), golf (Bud Radis and Daniel Schwarz), tennis (Andreea Badileanu and Anastasiia Vasiukhina) and baseball (Tyler Harris and Steve Sada) each placed two student-athletes on the list while Amber Logemann represented the softball program. Among those 13, Dusing, Stewart, Badileanu and Logemann are receiving the accolades for the second-straight year.
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a second-year award given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the spring sport schedules, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students, junior college and graduate school transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the 'best of the best' of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2015-16 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.
A total of 166 MAC student-athletes garnered Distinguished Scholar Athlete recognition. The full list of Miami honorees is below.
