OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week senior baseball outfielder Gary Russo and senior track and field runner Kathie Wollney are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of May 23-29. They are the final Miami Athletes of the Week for this season.
Russo capped off his Miami career by hitting .364 at the MAC Tournament last week. The St. Louis, Mo. native also collected four runs, one double, one home run and three runs batted in. His home run came in his last at bat in a Red & White uniform and was his 19th of 2016, a mark that ties him for the second-most in a single season at MU. Russo also finished with 31 homers for his career, placing him fifth all-time in Miami history.
This is the first time this season and in his career that Russo has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week.
Wollney had a strong performance in postseason competition last weekend. She finished 26th in the 400m hurdles in her first appearance at the NCAA East Region Prelims, clocking a personal-best time of 58.99. That was the second fastest time in program history. Wollney placed 22 spots higher than her pre-race seeding (48).
This is the first time this season and in her career that Woolney has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
Miami Athletes of the Week will resume in late August for the 2016-17 season.
