TOLEDO, Ohio ââ'¬" Miami University's women's tennis team picked up its first Mid-American Conference victory Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 win over the Toledo Rockets, breaking a five-match losing streak.
The RedHawks (6-9, 1-1 MAC) used a doubles sweep and six straight-sets victories in singles to top the Rockets (7-10, 1-3 MAC).
In doubles play, the pair of senior Ana Rajkovic and sophomore Hannah Shteyn picked up a 6-2 victory over Claire Aleck and Rani Goodland. The sophomore pair of Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina clinched the opening point with their fourth consecutive win, a 7-5 result over Sidnay Huck and Emily Mazzola. The second-flight match featuring junior Andreea Badileanu and freshman Anzhelika Shapovalova was abandoned with the pair leading 6-5.
Ponomareva also extended her singles streak to four with a 6-2, 6-3 third-flight victory over Colleen O'Brien. At No. 1 singles, freshman Anzhelika Shapovalova took down Huck, 6-4, 7-5, while Vasiukhina and freshman Emily Struble won their matchups with 6-3, 6-2 scores. Shteyn grabbed her first second-flight win of the season with a 6-3, 6-3 contest against Mazzola.
Miami returns home this weekend to open up action at the Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts. The RedHawks will take on Buffalo (10-5, 2-1 MAC) on Friday, April 8, followed by a visit from Akron (13-7, 3-1 MAC) on Sunday, April 10. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m.
