Owen Upsets Top Seed as RedHawks Open ITA Ohio Valley Regional

MASON, Ohio – The Miami University women's tennis team opened play at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships on Thursday. The RedHawks went 7-1 in singles on the day, with Clara Owen, Evelyn Risner, and Nina Chavez each winning twice to advance to the round of 16.

Highlights
Clara Owen knocked off the tournament's No. 1 seed, Louisville's Vustsina, after dropping the first set. Owen took over from there, winning 12 of the final 13 games to close out a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory. Nina Chavez also earned a win over a seeded opponent, defeating No. 16 seed Fuduric of Cincinnati in straight sets before adding a second straight-set win over Lipscomb. Evelyn Risner did not drop a set on the day, and Zara Darken picked up a straight-set win over Xavier in her opening match.
Up Next: The RedHawks continue play on Friday, Oct. 9. In singles, Owen will face No. 2 seed Smith (Louisville), Risner will take on Kurepa (Cincinnati), and Chavez will meet Aulia (Tennessee) in the round of 16. In doubles, Owen and Chavez will face Magarira/Oved (UT Chattanooga) at 2:30 p.m., and Allie Faulkner and Maria Luisa Oliveira will play Cooksey/Tungamirai (Tennessee State) at 4 p.m.
